Inspiration

In the spring of 2026, some old and tall trees were cleared from a short stretch of shoreline at Lake Zwischenahn in Germany. Right away, I noticed several beautiful fallen branches resting in the water just a few meters away. It was mid-afternoon, and the cottonwood tree was partially backlit. I decided to photograph the scene with my 720nm converted infrared Canon 5D Mark II, knowing that infrared would emphasize the luminous foliage. I experimented with several compositions, placing the tree directly beneath the rising smoke in some frames and off to one side in others to create a stronger diagonal flow through the image. read more.

The trees were covered in a layer of ice, which is why I really wanted to go out and capture this natural spectacle. This time, I was determined not to even look at the usual circles with a crack in the middle – the internet is full of these patterns, all of them spectacular, but I saw no need for me to add one more.
