When temperatures warm up after a severe winter and the winds start blowing from the south-west again, shelf ice is pushed towards the eastern shores of Lake IJsselmeer. The sheer amount of shelf ice and the strong winds cause a spectacular phenomenon where piles of shelf ice can reach heights of more then 6 meters. It’s a rare phenomenon here in the Netherlands, so if conditions are right you had better make sure you’re out there!
