Talk #20 What Have You Done by Beata Moore

Here I am, sitting in a café overlooking the River Thames, feasting my eyes on the glittering Christmas decorations, and watching people walk by. I am sipping on an overpriced (but delicious) latte, and in the background, John Lennon’s voice gently reminds me: “Another year over, and what have you done?”

This rhetorical question suddenly triggers a moment of introspection about my past year. I start thinking about my photographic journey - have I fulfilled all my creative and business goals? Honestly, I do not think I have been very realistic with them. Life happens, and there are never enough hours in the day!

I am sure many of you face similar challenges and, like me, may regret not accomplishing certain plans or dreams. But is it really so important to stick rigidly to plans? I believe we should embrace personal growth and photographic discovery in a broader sense, rather than tying ourselves to strict timelines or projects.

As photographers, we have chosen a path that is equal parts passion, occasional chaos, and “just one more shot” when spectacular light happens. And maybe that is the beauty of it: no strict timelines, no pressure — just the joy of creating and the thrill of capturing moments. So, if you didn’t tick every box this year, join the club! I hope next year gives you the time to pursue your new dream projects more freely and, as a result, eases the stress of everyday life.

Merry Christmas!
