Talk #17: The Spice of Life by Beata Moore

Many believe that specialising in niche photography can be beneficial for photographers, on the other hand, covering various subjects helps one's creativity and can make financial sense.

I have always had a keen interest in nature, this influenced my decision to study natural sciences. Five years of university studies instilled in me an appreciation of nature and especially, of the intricacy and the beauty of trees, so not surprisingly the trees featured heavily at the start of my photographic journey.

Very soon, however, I established a preference for coastal photography. I spent most of my summer holidays by the sea, so water has been my most natural environment. That is where I feel the most relaxed and most inspired.

A few more years later, architecture started to sneak into my photography. My interest in design was the main reason, but architecture is not only this. It is also a reflection of culture, environment, and complex engineering. I strongly believe that each building tells a story of its impact on people and its relationship to its surroundings. I always try to find this relationship and understand an architect’s vision, and intention behind it. The photograph presented here, blends well both, powerful nature and man-made response to it.

Such diverse subjects are part of my need for creative freedom and rejection of any restrictions on the subjects, and approaches I choose. We continuously learn and change during our lives, so our photography should evolve too. After all, variety is the spice of life, and changing what you do, makes life interesting.
